Alpha Lipoic Acid & Acetyl-L Carnitine HCL for Energy

Anyone who has needed to pass a test or needed to finish a work project on a deadline has probably wished for a way to boost mental power. There are two supplements that may help. Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) and Acetyl-L-carnitine HCL (ALC) have both been found to boost brain power in numerous research studies.

What is ALA?

ALA is an antioxidant made naturally by the body. It is also found in meats and vegetables such as spinach.

In each cell of the body, ALA helps turn glucose into energy, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.  ALA is a rare antioxidant. A study by published by the US National Library of Medicine found that alpha lipoic acid improved the memory and increased the learning powers of mice used in the study. Though, the mice that were administered ALA lived a few weeks less than the mice who were not given ALA. “The reason for the increased mortality with alpha lipoic acid in this species remains to be determined,” a researcher told the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. “However, these studies have confirmed the potent effect of alpha lipoic acid on memory and oxidative stress in SAMP8 mice.”

According to Psychology Today, ALA may help with many other problems, including stroke, diabetic neuropathy, brain injury, weight gain, Alzheimer’s and multiple sclerosis.

What is ALC?

Acetyl-L-carnitine is found mainly in red meat. Like ALA, it is an antioxidant and offers the same protection to cells. It is only water and alcohol soluble, though, so it does not protect as much of the body as ALA.

The body also uses ALC to promote the production of glutathione. Glutathione kills free radicals, according to Dr. Andrew Weil, much like ALA. ALC can also help to increase energy production in the mitochondria in a cell, which may boost physical and mental energy.

Studies support that ALC can be helpful in increasing brain function and reversing certain elements of aging. For example, the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Bari in Italy found that ALC almost completely reversed certain effects of aging in rats. A double-blind study by the Department of Internal Medicine, Postgraduate School of Gerontology and Geriatrics, University of Parma, Italy found that patients treated with acetyl-L-carnitine showed statistically significant improvement in their mental performance. A study by Neurological Clinic II of the University of Bari, Italy also found that ALC may help with Parkinson’s Disease.

How Much Alpha Lipoic Acid & Acetyl-L Carnitine HCL Should You Take?

According to the National Cancer Institute Division of Cancer Biology both of these supplements are popular supplements that can be consumed over a period of many years to maximize potential beneficial effects. The recommended dosage for acetyl-L-carnitine is 250mg. Side effects from taking excessive amounts for prolonged period of time may include vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, diarrhea and a “fishy” body odor, according to the National Institutes of Health.The recommended dosage for alpha lipoic acid is 150mg. The side effects for ALA from taking excessive amounts are rare and may include skin rash.
